The bug park -- made up of 15 businesses in Welwyn Garden City and ranging from a doctor's surgery to a chemical manufacturer -- was set up by Action 2000 and the DTI last year as an example of how to get bug plans right. Things do not seem to have gone to plan according to the latest audit. Bug testing is falling below the level required to show "due diligence" the report found. Planning for problems is also failing to take supply chain issues into account. The report urged all organisations to seek written assurances from their partners about bug compliance.

Gwynneth Flower initially hoped the bug park would serve as an example of good practise. Following the audit she hopes other businesses "can learn from the lessons and experiences" coming out the Bug park. "It is clear from our analysis that no one can afford to brush the Bug aside," she said.

March research from Action 2000 found only 2 in 5 UK businesses were on course to beat the bug.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
