One Year Ago: HP plans NetPCs for summer

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has spelt out its plans to be a pioneer in the nascent NetPC market that is backed by Microsoft, Intel and others.
HP will release a line of NetPCs under the Net Vectra banner this summer, priced from $1,000 in the US and with UK pricing to be confirmed. The systems will run standard Windows applications but will offer a lower cost of both purchase and ownership, according to HP.
The series will include HP TopTOOLS desktop management software and sport the ability to have BIOS and security upgrades undertaken remotely. HP expects strong sales in shared PC environments where users will log on to networks via smart cards that authenticate their ID.
A tool allowing MIS staff to estimate savings based on their IT environments that can be achieved through using NetPCs is available at HP's Web site.
