The Basingstoke, Hants. facility will employ about 100 staff over the next five years. Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown opened the facility, saying that Centerprise was unusual in being a UK player in a field dominated by overseas competition.

"British companies need to capitalise on the unique capabilities of the domestic workforce to differentiate themselves from foreign competition," Ashdown said. "We often can't make our goods cheaper than those from the Far East but when we focus on what Britain is renowned for - quality and design - it can be a recipe for success."

Centerprise had revenues of £37 million in 1996 and currently employs about 130 people.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
