Called Messenger ISDN, the service has an annual fee of around £976 and can be set-up in just 30 minutes using an online registration service, according to UUNET.

As well as Web access, FTP and a choice of domain name, email facilities for 25 users working on a Lan via mail hosting from UUNET are available. Alternatively, companies may install their own mail server.

The service, which has two versions, NT and Novell, will be available from UUNET's UK reseller channel on December 22.

"Messenger ISDN provides the next step-up from dial-up access, before bandwidth demand requires leased line connectivity," said Martin Temple, UUNET's channel sales manager.

Market research company Dulracher has predicted that SME interest in Net access is set to grow substantially. The company quotes figures of 20 per cent of UK SMEs wanting to get online within the next 12 months. Of the 39 per cent of UK SMEs already connected to the Internet, 30 per cent rate email as "crucial" and 30 per cent as "important".

UUNET will launch further ISDN-based products in the new year.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
