Sybase has joined EDS, Hewlett-Packard and France Telecom to provide the solution for World Cup Online, the official online system for the 1998 World Cup.

World Cup Online will include Info France 98, an information system for the international media, and SCORE!, a collective group of event applications that will allow the organising committee to run the event.

There will also be a Web site France 98 to provide information for the public.

The press, onsite officials, and commentators will have access to the information over networked clients, while the general public has access via the Internet. Sybase's SQL Server, a scaleable SQL database solution for workgroups of any size, will allow representatives in the 10 competition

venue cities to access the central database via its remote computing solution, so participants have access to the most current results information regardless of time or location.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
