In the old days when men were men, these wealthy companies would feud and call each other names until they were of an azure complexion. Now they buy parts of each other: witness Digital and Intel. Similar thing happened way back with Microsoft and Stac, of course. Speaking of buying off, for whom does the bell toll next? A man in the know says Sun might pick up Silicon Graphics while the latter's share price is in the ditch.

What about Marimba? Kim Polese's 'we ain't push' company is shopping around for UK staff. Word is the firm will set up shop west of London -- beauteous Bracknell area natch

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
