3Com heads for SoHo

"To survive, most small businesses must change the way they work but many computer companies don't make it easy for them," said Sharon Studer, general manager for office solutions. "These smaller companies don't have the know-how to help themselves."

According to statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry, 90 per cent of European businesses have less than 50 staff. It is to this type of customer that 3Com will address its OfficeConnect hubs, US Robotics modems and Etherlink LAN cards, and aim to improve ease of use.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
