Amusing to see that Newton is cutting prices on the MessagePad. The newly spun-off Apple paring has been proud of recent sales and has promised a swift display of profitability. All of which makes you wonder why the company was so keen to offload gratis several units to journalists recently.

Meanwhile, NatSemi's suitor Cyrix is at pains to stress that not much will change under the new management. Perhaps so, but that didn't stop one source speculating that the low price of the sale could attract a new bidder -- step forward IBM. More hassle for the Texans -- former AMD marketing whizz Paul Norman is leaving for fresh pastures.

Speaking of which, not everybody is happy that prices for the 6x86MX from IBM Microelectronics, the manufacturer of the devices, are way over the cost of buying them from Cyrix itself. Word is that IBM could be spoiling the good work it had done in the UK in selling Cyrix-designed parts.

Still on chips, AMD may have been celebrating its success pulling in Taiwan's finest Acer to the K6 camp but a bigger name may be jumping ship. There's still no sign of a Compaq AMD-based system despite plenty of hints that Pfeiffer's crew would take the part to get back at Intel. However, with Intel and Compaq looking cosier than for some time, the K6 isn't appearing on any roadmaps seen by Compaq pals.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
