Paul Maritz, group vice president of platforms and applications at Microsoft, said the VXtreme technology will provide future versions of NetShow with the "scalability to handle multiple bit rates and bandwidths ... for intranets as well as the Internet ... from 28.8 kilbits to one megabit."

Pete Mountanos, CEO and president of VXtreme, said the deal would provide its customers including CNN with "a roadmap to a standard platform to build a business around".

Maritz said that the recent agreement with Progressive Networks would help to establish a single streaming standard. "Our aim is to build a very strong platform. We feel the deals are complementary."

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
