MS streams ahead with NetShow 2.0, new purchase

Microsoft will today take another step forward in streaming video over the Internet by announcing a new version of its NetShow conferencing software and plans to acquire or take an investment in VXtreme, a one-year-old Silicon Valley startup.
The VXtreme deal, which most pundits expect to be an acquisition, is something of a surprise in that Microsoft only recently took an investment in Progressive Networks, the distance leader in media streaming and maker of RealAudio and RealVideo. VXtreme makes another video streaming product called Web Theater.
Microsoft is due to give a press teleconference at 6pm UK time but an invitation coyly refers only to "NetShow 2.0 and other streaming media announcements". The conference can be viewed using Web Theater on the VXtreme site.
Investors in VXtreme include Softbank (the owner of Ziff-Davis, publisher of ZDNet News) and Cisco Systems.
