In the week before Intel launches Pentium II, vendors are beginning to show their hands. On Wednesday, Fujitsu will show plans for PII-based servers, despite the fact that Intel is pushing its new chips towards high-end workstations in the hope of keeping Pentium Pro in the server space. The Fujitsu servers will be based on the Japanese giant's own chipsets and therefore best performance of competing 'Intel clone' products, the firm claims.

On Tuesday, Hand Technologies will host a teleconference discussing its 'relationship computing' person-to-person channel for selling computers and Net access.

The same day, Lotus will pitch its latest view of Notes as a development platform.

On Wednesday, Symantec will announce a $6 million investment in response centres to provide 24-hour anti-virus support.

At the same time, IBM will begin its SystemCare programme that lets users buy, manage and exchange their PCs via resellers based on a monthly payment.

Also that day, Europress Software will release Vitalize!, a Web browser plug-in for adding multimedia effects to Web sites, aimed at users who don't have the patience for Macromedia Director.

On Thursday - the day we all decide Britain's future, of course - managers of Gateway 2000, Intel and BBC will discuss the future of multimedia.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
