14.1-inch LCD notebooks will be huge... literally

UK notebook vendor Rock Computers will be among the first wave of PC vendors to introduce systems based on Intel's latest mobile-optimised MMX Pentium and huge hew 14.1-inch screens with a new line slated for October. However, the firm warned that many designs will be bigger than the average notebook.
Rock will use a 233MHz Pentium MMX in a high-end unit with up to 128Mb RAM, 512Kb cache RAM, 4Mb EDO RAM for graphics, 14.1-inch 1,024 x 768 screen and integral Ethernet. A modular bay accepts a variety of drives including CD-ROM/floppy, magneto-optical, Iomega Zip, 120Mb floppy or second battery.
Nick Boardman, managing director of Rock, said the 14.1-inch screen will mean outsize notebooks and a shake-up in mainstream configurations: "10.4-inch screens are gone; the manufacturers refuse to make them anymore. 13.3-inch will become mainstream and 14.1-inch will be the tops - there won't be any bigger screens. Some of the original designs for 14.1-inch screen notebooks are huge, like the old laptops. By the end of the year, a lot of vendors will be offering 120Mb floppy drives as standard."
