Lotus US poaches MS Office users

Users of Office Select (the enterprise version of Office) wanting to upgrade will be encouraged by Lotus to jump ship to SmartSuite at a reduced price, to a product that offers support for MS Office file formats and a Word Menu Help Expert that converts Word functions to Lotus Word Pro.

"It's a US-specific strategy," said Pam Mills, Lotus UK's SmartSuite '97 product manager. "There are no plans for this in the UK."

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
