Microsoft will replay its application strategy with tools by lowballing prices for its Visual Studio 97 tools when they are bought together as a suite. Microsoft expects a street price of £809 (£399 upgrade) for the Visual Studio, Professional Edition suite and £1,189 (£809 upgrade) for the Enterprise Edition. Products should be available from mid-April.

Visual Studio 97 includes: Visual Basic 5.0, Visual C++ 5.0, Visual InterDev 1.0, Visual J++ 1.1, Visual FoxPro 5.0 and Microsoft Developer Network Library. Enterprise Editions of Visual Studio 97, Visual Basic 5.0 and Visual C++ 5.0 also include the Developer Edition of Microsoft Transaction Server 1.0, Developer Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, Visual SourceSafe 5.0, RDO 2.0 and Visual Database Tools. Further tools for Enterprise customers, including Visual Modeler, will be available for download when available.

More product details and individual product pricing is available from Microsoft's new Visual Tools Web site.

Microsoft is currently rolling out its latest tools to over 45,000 developers at the first wave of 95 Developer Days events to be held all over the world. UK Developer Days are planned for Edinburgh (today, March 24), London (March 25) and Birmingham (March 26).

Microsoft Connections can be contacted by telephone on 0345-002000.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
