"No customers have been affected by this issue to date. There is only one Web site that illustrates the issue we know about, and it is only for demonstration purposes. Furthermore, we have not had any customer reports of this to date, and a webmaster would have to create code in order to enable the threat." - Microsoft, playing down another IE bug.

"We would like to commend Microsoft for making the fix available so quickly." - Cybersnot, whose creators discovered the bug.

"We've just sent out rate cards for UK advertising but at this point it's very much at the top lines of the service such as the UK Live celebrity events and maybe the computing and entertainment channels." - AOL's Judith Coley on online ads.

"I don't think Dell are significant competition for us. They have no credibility in this sector. They don't have the technology, product, channels, investment or market share. It's all talk and idle boasting. Our competition is Sun, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Maybe Digital and Silicon Graphics." - Compaq's Hugh Jenkins sticking the boot in on Dell. Plus ca change.

"The only way it will work is through a hardware swap." - Theresa Noonan of Motorola on 56K modem upgrades.

"28 companies - 70 per cent of 'head-end' [back-end hardware] and modem manufacturers are in the Open 56K Forum, including Motorola, Shiva, Lucent, Rockwell, and 3Com. USR has been invited to join, but has so far declined. We believe USR will have little choice but to join, since 3Com supports the group." - Noonan again.

"Nobody has seen sight or sound of it." - OR's Mike Dalton on Iomega's perhaps mythical 12.7mm high Zip drive for notebooks.

"The claims [that version 3.0 has a low detection rate] are untrue. The product's been tested to death." - McAfee's Jeff Barnes hitting back at claims from Dr Solomon's.

"McAfee's been saying [founder and non-executive board member] Alan Solomon has retired from the firm, which he hasn't, and calling us Dr Dolittle," - Graham Cluley of Dr Solomon's getting sore.

"If you're familiar with what it costs to set up a new brand name like Bernie and Serafina's Computers [referring to himself UK PR Serafina Espie], you'd understand why we're keeping the Olivetti name." - Olivetti Personal Computers chief executive Bernhard Auer.

"No longer will anybody be able to say that servers are Olivetti's best kept secret. The Web industry year lasts about four months and there is no way to win unless you partner strong companies." - Olivetti's Guiseppe Kuszli on the firm's Server Club.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
