Borland CEO Delbert Yocam is to lay off 30 per cent of staff and move more advertising to the Web in an effort to stem losses. 300 of Borland's current 1,000 employees will be laid off this quarter as part of a $60m restructuring plan.

Yokam said he intended to put "a considerable portion of [advertising expenditure] on the Web ... this is an opportunity to use the Web more proactively than we have in the past."

A spokeswoman for Borland UK said no jobs are expected to be lost in the UK. "We made the necessary changes back in 1995 and have been profitable for the past year," she said.
