Visual C++ 5.0 Professional Edition includes native support for Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) for ActiveX development, new class libraries and a revamped compiler the firm says builds faster, smaller code. The software is also optimised for Pentium Pro and the MMX instruction set.

Visual C++ 5.0 will also ship as part of the Visual Studio 97 suite along with Visual Basic 5.0, Visual J++ 1.1, Visual InterDev 1.0, and Visual FoxPro 5.0. The suite products will also be offered individually.

Microsoft will highlight the suite and provide pricing and availability details at a series of UK "Developer Day" conferences held March 21-26 in Dublin, Edinburgh, London and Birmingham. More details are available by telephoning 0990-228811.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
