London-based direct seller Mesh Computers is the first company to standardise on Intel's 440TX PCI chipset which offers support for the UltraDMA 33Mb/sec hard drive controller and a mix-and-match approach to configurations.

The Asustek motherboard used by Mesh provides four SIMM sockets and two DIMM sockets and offers a choice of up to 256Mb EDO RAM or 128Mb Synchronous DRAM. It also offers support for Cyrix and AMD as well as Intel CPUs, four ISA and four PCI slots, plus two USB ports and infra-red. Mesh will configure systems with Quantum's 3.2Gb Ultra ATA hard drive and ATI's 3D Rage II+ graphics card.

"The baseline performance difference between TX and the 430VX is only five and ten per cent but it's the flexibility of configurations offered by this chipset that will make it so popular," said Andrzej Bania, Mesh marketing manager.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
