Novell is almost ready to set sail in its Kayak. The networking giant last week issued the final beta of its small business client-server network product, codenamed Kayak, filling out a crucial part of its strategy.

Aimed at businesses with less than 25 users, the product is aimed at providing quick and easy networks for non-techies. Based on NetWare core code, Novell claims firms will be able to set up Kayak in less than half an hour using the Quick Start install process. A console called Novell Easy Administration Tool (NEAT) allows simple control of user rights, peripheral access and other key LAN functions.

Kayak will also ship with Application Launcher for centralised management of apps and Web Server 2.5 for Internet/intranet access.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
