UK users to wait for Compaq handheld

Compaq has announced its Windows CD-based handheld device. The Compaq PC Companion will be made available immediately in the US but UK users will have to wait until late 1997 for shipment. The device is designed to work in conjunction with a desktop PC system. It allows users to synchronise calendar files, read email and carry out a number of other tasks. Weighing it at less than 1lb, the PC companion offers a backlit touch-sensitive display, 2 or 4Mbytes of RAM and is powered by standard AA batteries. The device also features a version of Internet Explorer allowing you to connect to the Net.
The PC Companion uses a package called Mail on the Run to integrate with Lotus cc:mail and Microsoft mail. Other software includes Desktop to Go, which allows users to synchronise data files and the device runs the recently announced Windows CE operating system. The system can also use a PC card slot to connect devices such as modems and is expected to retail for around $500. UK prices and regional specifications have not yet been announced.
