Microsoft today fleshed out details of its Office 97 Developer Edition (ODE) software which it will release early next year at the same time as Office 97 end-user version.

ODE is based on Visual Basic for Applications 5.0, and lets users create applications that mimic the look and feel of - and have hooks into - Office suite apps. ODE includes all the Office applications, over 500 programmable objects, Microsoft Forms with ActiveX control support so users can embed forms into programs, and high-speed access to databases such as SQL Server. ODE uses IntelliSense programming help and the package also includes printed documentation. Pricing is to be confirmed.

"Office Developer has 100 per cent use of Office functions and all the things users like in Office," said Scott Horn, ODE product manager at Microsoft.

"People want to make the most use they can of a particular operating system like Windows 95," said Mike Pryke-Smith, Microsoft's developer tools product manager.

Microsoft can be contacted by telephone on 01734-270001.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
