JVC touts VCR-to-PC FireWire alternative

JVC said today it will launch products based on its new JLIP video protocol next month, shunning the much-touted IEEE 1394 'FireWire' bus standard. It will promote JLIP in VHS videos, camcorders and PC peripherals as a budget consumer alternative.
JLIP (Joint Level Interface Protocol) uses a parallel port cable and junction box to connect video equipment to a PC. JVC-badged JLIP products will come with editing software and will be aimed at creative home PC users and semi-professional video editors, the firm said.
"This is really a new market for JVC to go into as we're still a domestic company," said Andy Laithwaite, JVC's digital products co-ordinator. "We found that with FireWire there was nowhere to go for us in video terms. We will do it in time but the good old British public isn't ready for it yet. They're still getting their heads around Nicam."
The JLIP pack (£100 + VAT) will include the junction box, a cable, editing software, several mini-jack connectors and a power transformer.
