Open Group will steer ActiveX forward

Unix regulatory body The Open Group today said it had been chosen to steer Microsoft's ActiveX technology. Microsoft has long promised to hand over control of the specification to an independent body in order to reassure third-parties of the technology's openness.
A consortium of over 80 developers met in New York yesterday to plan the future of ActiveX. It elected The Open Group by a clear majority to drive the technology forward. The Open Group had earlier this weekagreed to merge with UniForum, a systems developers group.
"I've been asked by Microsoft vice president Paul Maritz to run the ActiveX Group," said Joe Maloney, Open Group director of product marketing and new business development. "This is exciting as it will involve the evolution of the technology. Microsoft has also released the source code to us which we can hand to X/Open for specs and tests, branding and so on."
The newly-formed Active Group will meet for the first time in the second week of November.
