Formerly known by its Red Dog codename, CompuServe 3.0 for Windows 95 and Windows NT offers a universal filing cabinet that can act as the fully-searchable container for E-mail, news downloads and chat messages. File viewers are also included so users can access more file types without needing the original native application installed. Audio and motion video players are also integrated. The software supports multitasking and has a To Do list that allows tasks such as file downloads to be scheduled for background operation.

A CompuServe spokesman said that although the US version is currently available for download, the UK version won't ship until the next CompuServe magazine goes out to subscribers at the end of October or early in November. The free cover disk will include CompuServe 3.0, CompuServe 2.5 for Windows 3.x users (with an integrated 16-bit version of Internet Explorer), and a host of utilities.

The firm will also start touting a new name for the service - CSi (CompuServe Interactive) - to distinguish it from other CompuServe products such as SpryNet and Wow!

CompuServe can be contacted by telephone on 01734-525555.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
