ActiveX and Java will not lock horns, says MS

"Every Java app-let [can be] an ActiveX Control," said Microsoft program manager for the Internet and tools division Charles Fitzgerald. "[ActiveX] allows Java app-lets to access all PC native functionality," including graphics accelerators, he said.

Next Tuesday, over 70 software and hardware developers are due to meet in New York to discuss ActiveX's future development. Companies attending will include Hewlett-Packard, Intel, SAP and Digital, and the meeting will be chaired by research firm The Burton Group. Microsoft plans to hasten cross-platform adoption by handing the technology over to a new independent standards authority.

Fitzgerald said ActiveX will be unprecedented in its openness: "When it comes to claims that Microsoft is proprietary or not open, we want to take that issue totally off the table," he said

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
