The chip giant claims Internet Phone differs from similar utilities in that it supports H.323-based communications rather than proprietary systems. H.323 is an open standard for conferencing, backed by Intel, Microsoft and many other industry leaders. Other new features include a busy line indicator, call progress indicator and better compression that provides 30 per cent smaller files.
The software requires a Pentium-based PC running Windows 95.
