Dell strides into servers

The entry-level 180MHz or 200MHz PowerEdge 2100 is aimed at small to medium-sized businesses and ships with 32Mb (upgradable to 256Mb) RAM, 2Gb hard drive, eight-speed CD-ROM drive, 15-inch monitor, Fast Ethernet card and three-year on-site warranty for £2,700 + VAT. The 2100 is available now, and will be followed by the dual-Pentium Pro 4100 in November, and the quad-Pentium Pro 6100 at the end of the year.
Dell said it is ready to ship models equipped with NT 4.0 by next week and says it expects about 40 per cent of sales to come with Windows NT 4.0. Each system is configured to order and assembled on-site. Dell offers a range of service options including four-hour on-site response.
