Revenues climbed to $1.69 billion for the second quarter ending July 28, a 40 per cent jump over the same quarter a year ago. Net income was also up sharply to $103 million. The quarter leaves Dell with nearly $1 billion in cash and securities. Server sales were spectacular, up 115 per cent on a year earlier.

Dell said European sales grew 35 per cent compared to a year earlier, and claims to be the second biggest PC vendor in the UK and fourth biggest in Europe.

PCDN Comment: This is a spectacular set of figures by any standards, and deserving of a highlighter pen in the case of the European stats. Dell has been very aggressive on pricing recently, particularly on the Pentium Pro, and has clearly reaped the rewards of a patient approach to its previously slow server business.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
