Five years ago: Intel set to unify Pentium chipsets early next year

Called the 430TX, the chipset will offer support for all of today's most popular system memory technologies including Extended Data Out (EDO) RAM, Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM), and Error-correcting and Checking (ECC) RAM; 33Mb/sec I/O; multiprocessor support; improved power management; and unspecified faster graphics handling.

The 430HX and 430VX chipsets have created divided loyalties between PC vendors attracted by the discreet feature sets each offers.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
