Online retailer Amazon has recorded its best Christmas shopping figures ever, with a significant jump in sales compared to 2005.

Amazon UK handled 750,000 orders on 4 December, its busiest day of the year, which was equal to nine orders per second. It also shipped a total of 600,000 items on one day — compared to a high of 480,000 in the run up to last Christmas.

"Internet retailing has taken another huge step forward this Christmas," said Brian McBride, managing director of Amazon.co.uk.

Although impressive, Amazon.co.uk's performance was somewhat overshadowed by Amazon's US arm, which hit a high of four million orders in one day on 11 December.

The growth in broadband connections has fuelled the growing e-commerce market in the UK. Although most retailers aren't expected to reveal Christmas sales figures until January, early indications are that online spending jumped this year. Tesco.com say a 30 percent jump in orders, from one million unique users to 1.3 million, according to the Daily Telegraph.

US-based ComScore Networks predicted on Wednesday that online spending in America for November and December will reach $24.6 billion, which would be a 25 percent increase from the corresponding period last year.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
