The UK Department for Constitutional Affairs has launched a website to help public authorities prepare for the Freedom of Information Act.
The site was launched on 1 July, 2004, less than 130 working days before the act comes into force. It is intended to provide a one-stop shop for information about the legislation for bodies ranging from GP surgeries to police forces to local authorities.
After 1 January, 2005, the public will be able to request a wide range of information from public authorities, such as the minutes of meetings and background material used to formulate policies.
Information rights minister Lord Filkin said: "I am keen that the legislation stimulates a change of attitude towards official information throughout our public services, which must realise that they need to engage the public at all levels.
"This website will provide a valuable resource for everyone working hard to prepare for the day that the Freedom of Information Act comes into force, which is now less than six months away."
The site includes resources produced by the DCA to help public bodies implement the legislation, and will be regularly updated. It includes:
There is also a list of every public authority subject to the act, and instructions for people who might be interested in making a request for information when it comes into force.
