The Office of National Statistics is planning a relaunch of its Neighbourhood Statistics website

Alan Smith, geographic information strategist for ONS, said it intends to introduce the new site early in 2005. It will carry information that is basically the same as on the existing site, but new functions will make it more flexible and easier for users.

Speaking at the Open GIS Consortium on 14 June, 2004, Smith said: "There will be a new architecture that allows us to concentrate more on the use of geography. We're thinking more about what end users want to see from the data.

"We're talking about having links to government departments and other data suppliers, but we have to plan with the interoperability angle."

He said that, while work is going on the new architecture, it will be based Oracle, Java, extensible mark-up language (XML) and extensible stylesheet language (XSL).
