Job cuts expected at CNN's Web operations

CNN News Group, part of Time Warner, is expected to announce significant job cuts, possibly as early as next week, from its Internet and TV operations.

The losses were announced in an email sent to employees last December, warning of "aggressive changes" amid a unit-wide evaluation of all CNN's 4,000 employees, according to Thursday's Wall Street Journal.

Up to 1,000 jobs could be lost, although it is understood that some positions could be eliminated through natural wastage and internal reorganisation. It is not clear precisely when the cuts will begin.

Insiders believe the reorganisation is an attempt to combine CNN's news resources into one operation. As well as its CNN news TV channel, the company also runs several other channels and Web sites -- and may be hoping provide more in-house content for its Web site.

I wonder, who needs .asia domain? I cannot imagine, what would be useful for Microsoft.asia? Toyota.asia? Then let's register .europe (if .eu is too short). Or perhaps Microsoft.southamerica, Dell.australiaandnewzealand, Coca-Cola.africa... Sound funny? Then why not just use the global and country domains? Or perhaps it is time to drop the domains at all?
