The government launches a Web site dedicated to mapping the UK's position in the global e-economy Wednesday.

The UK's e-envoy Alex Allan unveils the new online service -- dubbed eStatMap -- which is available via his Web site: www.e-envoy.gov.uk.

EStatMap contains data from official government statistics as well as private research concerning the Internet in the UK. Visitors can find information about Internet uptake and prices around the world, variations in Internet use throughout Britain, and perceived barriers to Internet access.

The first official government figures on Internet use in the UK, published earlier this month, indicate that the poorest parts of the UK are dramatically less wired than more affluent areas.

I wonder, who needs .asia domain? I cannot imagine, what would be useful for Microsoft.asia? Toyota.asia? Then let's register .europe (if .eu is too short). Or perhaps Microsoft.southamerica, Dell.australiaandnewzealand, Coca-Cola.africa... Sound funny? Then why not just use the global and country domains? Or perhaps it is time to drop the domains at all?
