News Burst: Quality of service price to pay for cheaper Net

Oftel's decision to end BT's monopoly of Internet services is being hailed as a victory for consumers but experts predict trouble ahead.

While experts claim the ruling -- described by AOL as a "seismic shift in the telecoms landscape" -- will make it easier for ISPs and telcos to offer cheap surfing, quality of service will be affected according to Ovum analyst Tim Johnson. "ISPs can start offering all the Internet you can eat for £10 a month but they wont be able to guarantee that at peak times. There are going to be times when the service overloads," he says.

I wonder, who needs .asia domain? I cannot imagine, what would be useful for Microsoft.asia? Toyota.asia? Then let's register .europe (if .eu is too short). Or perhaps Microsoft.southamerica, Dell.australiaandnewzealand, Coca-Cola.africa... Sound funny? Then why not just use the global and country domains? Or perhaps it is time to drop the domains at all?
