The Woolwich will offer £80 off Vodaphone WAP-enabled phones as it becomes the first bank to roll out mobile banking service across the UK.

After a successful three month trial, the Woolwich decided to launch WAP banking nationally and is offering a 60 percent discount on a Nokia 7110 WAP phone and a 20 percent reduction on line rental.

Users will be able to transfer money between accounts, make bill payments up to six weeks in advance, view their balance, check transaction details and access news and weather information.

Woolwich chief executive John Stewart believes mobile phones will eventually replace cash. "Swapping your card or cheque book for your mobile phone to pay for the weekly shopping may sound far fetched, but it is a real possibility in the near future," he says in a statement. "This is just the start of the unwired Internet revolution."
