The race to be the first to provide a portable Internet solution continued apace Tuesday, with Casio and Vodafone Airtouch (quote: VOD) teaming up to develop multimedia wireless palmtop computers.

The announcement also bolsters Microsoft's ambition to establish its Windows CE platform as the dominant operating system for wireless devices.

The first handheld device is due this autumn. It will feature full colour Internet access, with audio and video capability. Future iterations will feature integrated mobile GPRS handset technology, though communications capabilities of the first device will be limited to connecting to a GPRS mobile handset.
