News Burst: CallNet buckles, suspends registrations

On its first day, just hours after its launch, CallNet has admitted it is not able to cope with demand for its free Internet service.

The company assured ZDNet last week that it had put in place all necessary contingencies to ensure a smooth rollout, but this morning posted a notice on its Web site stating that registration has been suspended.

The registration page states the following: "Due to exceedingly high demand for registrations, BT have asked us to suspend registrations whilst they upgrade capacity."

Despite numerous attempts, CallNet was not available for comment.
