News Burst: CallNet overwhelmed one hour after launch

ZDNet has received a number of reports of callers unable to get through to register for the service. At present all callers to the 0800 number will receive is a dead dial tone. According to BT this is down to congestion, with "a fair few thousand" callers trying to get through.

This is despite assurances from CallNet on Friday that it had taken adequate steps to cope with the expected demand, with a spokesman dismissing as "ludicrous" analysts' claims that it would be overwhelmed with registrations.
