Internet analyst Henry Blodget, of investment bank Merrill Lynch, has warned investors that only a select few companies will dominate the online marketplace, although he also predicted that the industry at large would continue to grow handsomely.

Blodget reportedly warned his clients that between seven and ten companies may share between them the spoils of e-commerce within the next decade.

However, Blodget also predicted the industry as a whole is likely to grow from $250bn to several trillion within a few years. Blodget's optimism far exceeds predictions of a number of other financial analysts.

Blodget is famed for predicting the meteoric rise of Amazon.com, while other analysts were arguing that the company would soon fall from grace.
