Dixons launches free ISP service

Yet another ISP has been launched in the UK. This time the UK's largest electrical retailer, Dixons, has joined the rush to provide online services and claims its Freeserve service is the UK's first fully featured free Internet product.
The company is urging customers to stroll into its chain of electrical stores, including Currys, PC World and The Link, pick up a CD with the dial-up software and access the Internet with nothing to pay except the telephone bill.
According to the firm comparable ISP offerings cost around £12/month, costing the 1.16 million online UK households around £165m a year. "There are thousands of households that would struggle to justify spending £12/month in addition to phone charges to access the Internet," says John Clare Dixons group chief executive. "With the launch of Freeserve those days are over."
