Solomon's ships own-brand Virex for Mac

Dr Solomon's is stepping up its activity in the Macintosh market by shipping its first branded version of Virex (£99 + VAT single-user), the anti-virus package it bought from Datawatch in October last year.
Virex includes the SpeedScan detection engine and Scan-At-Download protection against Internet-borne and mail file attachment viruses, as well as file zipping and compression utilities. Buyers of multi-user Virex licences get Virex Administrator, a utility aimed at managing virus detection across networks by providing tools for remote and scheduled detection routines.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Dr Solomon's, said more elements of Dr Solomon's Anti-Virus for Macintosh will be introduced to Virex in the future.
"There are some things that Anti-Virus for Mac can do that Virex can't. For instance, it's got a 'smug mode' that can find viruses on PCs. Virex has a better user interface, speed and administration. We didn't have a vast amount of Mac expertise before buying the Virex division and Virex is a very well-established name in Macintosh circles. The real reason we needed cover was macro viruses. Before, there were about 50 viruses on the Mac and now there are about 2,050. The 2,000 are all macro viruses."
