Netscape downplays bold claims from SoftArc

Netscape today played down the threat of SoftArc following the Canadian groupware specialist's claim yesterday it will beat Netscape, Lotus and Novell with its Internet messaging software, and grab the number two slot below Microsoft.
"At the moment, every company has come up with good [groupware] solutions," said Jed Kleckner, Netscape's manager of European Internet partners. However, he added that Netscape's fourth generation Communicator client will succeed because of features such as calendering, and the ability to deploy applications across the enterprise.
In response to SoftArc CEO Scott Welch's claim that Netscape lacked the technical expertise in mail technology, Kleckner said: "The majority of Netscape's investment has been in engineers and in R+D. We wouldn't go into an area if we weren't confident we'd succeed."
