Softdev96/WebDev96, Olympia: Net tools out in force

Internet development tools dominated the new product announcements at the first day of SoftDev/WebDev at Olympia, London. Companies including Borland, Haht, and Symantec were previewing new products.
Borland showed Borland JBuilder - previously codenamed Latte- its development environment for Java applications as well as Borland C++Builder, a drag and drop rapid application development (RAD) tool using the C++ language. JBuilder will ship in 1997, C++ builder will enter public beta trials in January and Delphi 97 will be previewed at the Windows show in late February.
Haht Software UK were anticipating the launch of HAHTSITE 2.0 in mid December. HAHTSITE, already available in version 1.0 is an integrated development tool for building and maintaining Web-based applications that integrated with existing databases.
Symantec demonstrated Visual Cafe. This RAD tool builds Java applications via drag and drop and has an Interaction Wizard to specify program response to actions. Available for Windows 95 and NT in the second week of December - boxed product will arrive later - Visual Cafe will be priced at £169 for the standard version and £479 for Visual Cafe Pro. The Pro edition will include dbANYWHERE to add database connectivity.
