Yahoo! UK will comprise over 12,000 UK and Irish Web sites, as well as the existing US-based directory. It will also provide headline news including Reuters feeds, and contain What's New, What's Cool and Random sections selected by a local UK team.

Yahoo! UK product manager Ralph Averbuch said: "Let's say you want to buy a car. It's very hard to limit a search to the UK, until now. We want it to be used every day on a social level. The Yahoo! approach has already proved to be successful in the US where we have 300 million page requests every month. In addition, Yahoo! UK will be culturally relevant to the UK."

Yahoo! UK will be followed in October by local-language sites for France and Germany.
