Teradata puts data in 'hot' storage

Teradata on Monday launched virtual storage software that gives priority to the data accessed most by a business.
The technology, Teradata Virtual Storage, seeks out 'hot' data — the information used most frequently — and puts it on the fastest hardware, the company said. 'Cold' data, which is used less often, is put on the back burner.
Teradata, which competes in the datawarehousing sector with the likes of Oracle and HP, said its Virtual Storage technology can cut the cost of additional storage by as much as 10 times.
The software, which is bundled with the Teradata 13 Database, is designed to attract the increasing numbers of businesses flocking to datawarehousing providers for enhanced analytics and the ability to better manage risks and avert business disasters.
According to Teradata, the Virtual Storage technology can adapt as companies' data-usage changes. One example would be a wireless company that analyses the most recent 90 days of customer records. Initially, those records would be hot. Later, this information would head to cold storage and be placed on slower systems.
