Fusion-io launches fast SSD storage

Fusion-io has introduced the ioDrive Duo, a PCI-Express-based solid-state drive that stores up to 640GB.
The server-based SSD provides double the capacity of the company's previous card-based drive, the ioDrive, Fusion-io said in its announcement on Wednesday.
California-based Fusion-io, which has Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak as its chief scientist, specialises in high-speed SSDs for use in corporate systems such as database servers.
The performance of multiple ioDrive Duos scales linearly, according to Fusion-io. For example, four drives in one subsystem can read at up to 6GB per second and deliver more than 500,000 read input/outputs per second (IOPS), it said.
Individually, the drives offer a sustained read bandwidth of 1.5GB per second and a sustained write bandwidth of 1.4GB per second, assuming a packet size of 32K in both cases, the company said.
The drive will launch in April with a storage capacity of 160GB, 320GB or 640GB. A higher-capacity card with a SSD of 1.28TB will become available in the second half of 2009.
