Via project to boost Linux support

Via Technologies, a supplier of chipsets and x86 processors, has launched a project to improve support for its products with Linux and other open-source platforms.

Announced at the not-for-profit Linux Foundation's annual Collaboration Summit in Austin, Texas, this week, the chipmaker said that the soon-to-be-launched Via Linux website will be central to the project, hosting drivers, technical documentation, source code and other information on its most popular chipsets for PCs, mobiles and embedded computing.

There are also plans to add official forums and support for additional products later on this year. The company intends to adhere to a regular quarterly release schedule that is aligned with Linux kernel changes and the release of major Linux distributions. In addition, beta releases will be issued on the site when needed and a bug report and tracking feature will also be integrated.

"The Linux market is expanding, just as the workloads for Linux deployments are expanding. We will work with the community and industry over the rest of the year on how to fuel this growth," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. "We are delighted that Via has announced its commitment to enhance support for Linux and open source. This will open up exciting new opportunities for accelerating open-source innovation around Via platforms and, ultimately, delivering a better user experience."

The Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit organisers describe the event as a meeting place for Linux community developers, distribution and system vendors, ISVs and end users. Its aim is to accelerate problem-solving in the community by bringing OEMs and systems integrators together in a neutral setting.
