Dell on Monday introduced a blade server with a new chassis and blade design, and updated connectivity options.

The PowerEdge M-Series server was developed over two years and 55,000 man hours, making for the "most extensive R&D programme we've ever done", said Rick Becker, vice president of solutions for Dell.

Upgrades include stronger handles for carrying individual blades, the option of adding 10Gb Ethernet ports to existing 1Gb ports, and the capability for remote or local management with a KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) switch.

The PowerEdge M-Series is designed to put Dell on a better competitive footing with rivals HP and IBM, which outpace the Texas PC maker in the blade market.

The M-Series blade enclosure starts at £2,699, with individual blades starting at £979. These prices exclude VAT.
