NEC launches vPro PCs

NEC has launched two computers utilising Intel's vPro technology, which it claims will reduce the total cost of ownership for buyers.
The PowerMate ML470 desktop and Versa M370 notebook both feature integrated Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), which stores hardware and software information in non-volatile memory to facilitate remote management whether the machines are turned on or off. In the case of the ML470, the technology is incorporated via Intel's Q35 vPro chipset, while the M370 is based on the Centrino Pro platform.
According to NEC, the use of vPro technology reduces total cost of ownership because the manufacturer's retail partners can perform maintenance remotely, rather than making on-site visits, and launch new services for their customers using the remote-access capability.
The Versa M370 notebook includes a webcam, an 802.11n Wi-Fi radio, a numeric keypad and up to eight hours of battery life, while the PowerMate ML470 desktop comes in a choice of three chassis size options, including small desktop, microtower and "small form factor".
